Dodge EV Lineup
With advances in automotive electrification technology, it's now possible for auto manufacturers to produce vehicles that deliver outstanding fuel economy without sacrificing driving pleasure. Dodge is putting itself at the forefront of this exciting trend with the addition of electrified performance models to its current and future lineups. Check out this guide to find out what the American automaker has in store for electric vehicle (EV) buyers in the 2023 model year.
Does Dodge Have an EV in Its 2023 Lineup?
Dodge doesn't have an all-electric vehicle in its 2023 lineup. However, it offers a plug-in-hybrid model in the form of the Hornet R/T to appeal to car buyers who want to save money on gas and help the environment. If you're looking for an all-electric Dodge vehicle, you'll have to wait until the 2024 model year, when the automaker releases the highly anticipated Charger EV.
What You Need To Know About the 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T
The 2023 Dodge Hornet is a revived nameplate that was most recently used for a station wagon in the 1970s. While it isn't one of Dodge's iconic muscle cars, the compact SUV is expected to play an important role in the brand's sales and electrification strategies. As the new entry-level Dodge vehicle, it marks a return to the mainstream market from which it's been absent since the discontinuation of the Journey crossover in 2020. The all-new Dodge Hornet comes in two variants: the gasoline-powered GT and plug-in-hybrid R/T. Let's take a look at the specifications and features of the R/T:
Performance and Fuel Economy
Despite being an electrified model, the Hornet R/T is more powerful than the GT. It comes equipped with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor that combine to deliver 285 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque with PowerShot. Only available in the R/T, PowerShot is an electric boost function that allows the electric motor to go full bore and generate 30 more horsepower. The gas engine is mated to a slick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.
When it's in PowerShot mode, the R/T can sprint from zero to 60 mph in a mere 5.6 seconds and go on to reach a top speed of 128 mph. Additionally, it's capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds, which is impressive for a small SUV. Although official information isn't available yet, the R/T is expected to return better gas mileage than the GT's 21/29 mpg (city/highway). It can also travel up to 30 miles on electricity before the internal combustion engine kicks in.
Other than a punchy powertrain, the Hornet R/T features a dual-mode suspension that enables it to deliver remarkable poise and handling in most driving situations. Thanks to its nicely weighted and responsive steering, the crossover is easy to navigate through crowded city streets, even when it's in Sport mode. It also does a great job of absorbing bumps, potholes, and other uneven surfaces, preventing vibrations and jolts from intruding the cabin.
When you're in the mood for spirited driving, the Hornet R/T has got you covered as well. With its agile handling and exceptional body control, this Dodge tackles tight corners and winding roads with aplomb. The PowerShot function is a lot of fun to use, as it can give you a boost in speed when you're coming out of a slow turn or performing a passing maneuver. The SUV also comes with big Brembo brakes that inspire confidence.
Similar to other Dodge vehicles, the Hornet is expected to consistently deliver reliable performance. Due to its sturdy build and durable components, it can be a long-lasting road companion as long as you keep up with your routine maintenance schedule.
Exterior Styling
Although it shares a platform and certain components with the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the 2023 Hornet R/T is unmistakably a Dodge. It borrows some design elements from other new Dodge models, such as the Charger and Durango. From the front, the crossover looks bold and aggressive with its narrow headlights and arched, sculpted hood. A strong shoulder line, a sloping roofline, and pronounced rear haunches give it a muscular and athletic profile, while slim full-width taillights add a touch of sleekness.
Tech and Safety Features
To make your trips more convenient and enjoyable, the Dodge Hornet R/T boasts a UConnect 5 infotainment system that's easy to use and packed with desirable features. Standard tech features include a 10.25-inch touch-screen display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The compact SUV also has a host of driver assistance systems to help you stay safe on the road, such as automated emergency braking, lane departure alert, blind-spot detection, and adaptive cruise control. If you want better protection, you can opt for the Tech Package, which adds active lane keeping, traffic-sign recognition, intelligent speed assist, driver attention monitoring, and intelligent adaptive cruise control that supports stop-and-go driving.
Upcoming Dodge EV Models
If you want to buy an all-electric vehicle that packs a powerful punch, the 2024 Dodge Charger is definitely worth the wait. Regarded as the world's first electric muscle car, this next-generation Dodge model is expected to deliver a level of performance comparable to that of the track-ready Hellcat. Yet, it's capable of achieving an incredible driving range of up to 500 miles.
The upcoming Charger will be available in three variants: the 455-horsepower 340 model, 590-horsepower 440 model, and the high-performance SRT Banshee. The all-wheel-drive Banshee uses an 800-volt architecture, but its horsepower rating hasn't been revealed yet. The Charger EV is set to be a two-door coupe, but a four-door version may also join the lineup.
