While CPO vehicles cost a little more than the standard used car, CPO programs make up for the price difference through greater peace of mind from service and warranty programs. These added benefits provide an intangible value you can benefit from for years.

Buying a used car always comes with some risk since no one can know precisely how well a car has aged. CPO programs help you feel more assured about your purchase. Most manufacturer and dealer CPO programs require that cars undergo multi-point inspections. These inspections ensure that the vehicle is in as good a condition as possible at the point of sale.

Many of these programs involve 100 or more inspection points, covering every major system and checking the exterior to ensure the car meets standards for appearance. For example, the Chrysler CPO program includes assessments in these categories:

     
  • Pre-road test, covering the hood release, brake fluid, power steering, battery condition, charging system, and throttle linkages.
  •  
  • Operational systems, including the remote key fob, lift gate, trunk, steering column adjuster, ignition switch, and airbag system.
  •  
  • Maintenance, including inspecting the air filter, manual transmission fluid, front-differential fluid, engine oil, and filter system.
  •  
  • Braking, with inspections of brake booster performance, the antilock braking system, and overall stopping performance.
  •  
  • Appearance and detailing, such as instrument and door panels, luggage compartments, wheel covers, headliner trays, carpets, and floor mats.

Chrysler also checks comfort factors, such as any signs of air leaks, which can cause a noisy drive. Chrysler even covers practical issues, such as locating and securing the owner's manual and related warranty documents.

These head-to-toe inspections are characteristic of CPO programs and generally do not apply to the standard used car.

Warranty Coverage

The inspections lay the groundwork for the dealer or manufacturer to offer warranty coverage. Many CPO programs include warranty coverage that can make you feel more confident about your car's condition. 

Jeep's CPO program comes with a seven-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. The seven-year time clock runs from the date of the original sale of the vehicle in new condition or 100,000 files on the odometer, whichever comes first. Jeep and other manufacturers' warranties usually cover the repair or replacement of most major powertrain components, including transmission, engine, and driveline. A deductible typically applies.

Jeep CPO cars also come with three-month, 3,000-mile maximum care warranties, which cover you for a limited period after the sale of the CPO vehicle. The warranty is in place from the sale date through the length of the CPO program or when the original three-year, 36,000-mile warranty expires. Warranty coverage extends to most vehicle components, and a deductible applies for each covered visit.

Jeep and other manufacturers also offer the ability to extend the warranty by purchasing one of several upgrade plans. These programs generally start on the date of the purchase of the plan, and include programs known as Powertrain Care, Added Care Plus, and Maximum Care. Here again, a deductible applies on every visit.

These warranties do not offer the same protection as those with new cars. However, they do provide significant value in case something should go wrong with your CPO vehicle.

Budget Relief

CPO cars sell at lower prices than new cars, saving you money upfront. You can also realize longer-term financial benefits when considering the total cost of car ownership. New cars typically depreciate quickly as soon as they leave the lot, by some estimates, up to 20% in value in the first year. By purchasing a CPO vehicle, you avoid that depreciation and have a better chance of your car retaining value when you sell it. That alone can warrant paying a slightly higher price for the CPO vehicle.

Lower interest rates are another potential money-saver. Because CPO cars offer additional guarantees, the vehicles generally have less risk. Hence, lenders are willing to finance them on better terms. For instance, Chrysler Capital offers many different financing options for CPO vehicles.

Miscellaneous Advantages

Many CPO programs offer extra benefits that bring added value to your car purchase. For example, the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram CPO vehicles provide 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, such as battery jumps, as well as a car rental allowance and first-day rental coverage. These come into play if your vehicle requires repairs, is inoperable due to the failure of a covered component, or your needed repairs take overnight.
